Weekly Portrait Sketches Jun 04-10 2018

As a practicing artist, I do a lot of sketching, especially portrait sketches. It was my intention with this blog to post sketches as I go, but that got a little overwhelming and I fell behind. So instead I am going to post my my favorite sketches on a weekly basis and see how that goes.

I try to sketch every day, but sometimes life just gets too busy. Fortunately I’m part of a three weekly drawing groups so that keeps me sketching at least three times a week. This week’s sketches come from those groups.

Watercolor Portrait of Dela M.

Watercolor Portrait of Dela M.

This watercolor portrait was painted from life during yesterday’s Sunday portrait group. Every Sunday a group of artists meet at a studio in Portland, Maine where a guest is invited to sit for us and have their portrait drawn or painted in 2 and a half hours.

Dela Sitting For Her Portrait

This week, Dela Murphy sat for us. Dela is on the board of two great local organizations that support the arts in Portland: Mayo Street Arts and the Friends of Congress Square Park.

Watercolor portraits are a relatively new thing for me as I’ve been primarily using oil pastels during these drawing groups for the past couple years. I am enjoying the fluidity of them and the excitement of not knowing exactly how they are going to turn out!
